I worked with a next generation successor to help them evaluate if working in the family company was a suitable short-term career move.

Together we analysed and reviewed the strategy of their families’ business and those elements contributing to its success. Second, we reviewed the skills, experience and aptitude necessary to work in the industry in which their family business was competing. Finally, we took the time to review their career, particular strengths, likes and particular aptitudes and matched these to those aptitudes desirable for a career in the family business.

Uninvolved successor

Preparation for succession conversations with current owners and those working in the family company

Together we explored her succession opportunity and specific topics, over a six-month period. Our aim was to prepare her for conversations on succession with her father and brother, both involved in the family company.

First, we identified and discussed the critical success factors for the business and the considerable potential for development. Second, we covered all of the possibilities for ownership and the succession process. Third, we reviewed the role of family director. Finally, I worked with the family member to prepare them for conversations on succession, possible roles and possible timelines to consider change.
